MARK GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY
Canajoharie - A former Amsterdam couple, Mr and Mrs Lester Abeling of 32 Wheelock St, Canajoharie, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary yesterday afternoon with an open house gathering given by their children.
Abeling and the former Miss Katherine Duffy, both of Amsterdam, were married Nov 10, 1914, in St Mary's Church, Amsterdam, in a double wedding ceremony, the first held in that church. Married at the same time was Abeling's brother, Fred, and the former Miss Francis Kline.
Mr and Mrs Abeling have been residents of the Canajoharie area for the past 40 years, Mr Abeling being in the garage business most fo that time. Presently he operates a garage on West Main Street, near the Thruway entrance.
The couple have six living children: Robert, Canajoharie; James, Palatine Bridge; Mrs Carolyn Conrad, Fort Plain RD; Carl, Palatine Bridge; Mrs Katherine Frasier, Palatine Bridge; and Thomas, Waverly. They also have 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The couple was entertained at their home yesterday afternoon by their children, and a host of their relatives and friends called to pay tribute to the local businessman and his wife.
There were the four generations of the family present as the couple cut a tiered wedding cake in honor of the event. They were presented with a number of gifts, flowers and cards for the occasion and Mrs. Abeling. |

 | Frances Kilinski Abeling
Guy Park Ave in Amsterdam, New York Frances Kilinski Abeling and her nephew Robert William Abeling, who was born in 1916. Estimating that he is 4 or 5 in this photo - the photo's date would be 1920 or 1921. At that time, Robert William Abeling lived part of the time with his parents and also part time with his Grandmother Carrie Abbey Abeling.
The 1920 Montgomery County census confirms that William Robert lived with parents in 1920 and also with William and Carrie Abeling at 47 Maple Ave.
The 1920 Amsterdam Directory does confirm that Frederick and Frances Abeling lived at 112 Guy Park Ave. Robert William Abeling recalls visiting this location with his Grandma Carrie and he recalls that Fred & Frances lived in brick house on Guy Park Ave. |
 | Robert William Abeling with Frances Kilinski Abeling Robert William Abeling, born 1916, often visited his Uncle Fred and Aunt Frances, who lived on Guy Park Avenue in Amsterdam.
Originally this photo was thought to be of Caroline Abbey Abeling, but was later identified as Frances Kilinski Abeling by Robert William Abeling.
Photo is estimated to about 1919. |
 | Caroline Abbey Abeling and Robert William Abeling Woman in the background is believed to be Caroline Abbey Abeling. The boy on the bike is believed to be Robert William Abeling who was born in 1916. Based on Robert being 5 in this photo, the photos date might be 1921.
Photo location is unknown. |
 | Is this Carrie Abbey Abeling? The baby is Robert William Abeling, born 1916. However, we are unsure if the woman is Carrie Abbey Abeling or Frances Kilinski Abeling? |
 | WR Abeling Sr holding Charles F. Abeling, Robert William Abeling on the right. Considering Charles F Abeling was born 1918 and died in 1923, the photo's estimated date would be 1920 or 1921.
Location appears to be the back of the Abeling home on Maple Ave, as I was told that there used to be stairs that went from directly to the second floor from back yard. |
 | WR Abeling Sr, Frederick Abeling, and Robert William Abeling Man on left is William Robert Abeling, Sr. Boy is middle is Robert William Abeling, Girl is unknown? Man on right is Frederick Abeling.
Photo is believed to have been taken in town of Day area, as Robert William Abeling recalls going with his grandfather William to visit his Uncle Fred in the Day area.
Robert William Abeling was born 1916. If we estimate him to be 5 years old in this photo, the year might be 1921. |
 | Lester Abeling, Robert William Abeling, WR Abeling Sr. Left: Lester Abeling
Middle: Robert William Abeling,
Right: WR Abeling Sr.
Brian Abeling's Notes:
If we estimate Robert William Abeling to be 16 to 18 years old, that places the photos date in the range of 1932 to 1935. However, WR Abeling Sr's obituary states that he died in 1936 and was ill for 2 years. If that's true, I would suggest the date for this photo to be 1932 or 1933.
Location is unknown |
 | WR Abeling Sr and Robert William Abeling Left: WR Abeling Sr in his World War I uniform, holding Robert William Abeling.
Robert was born in 1916 and if we estimate him to be 1 or 2 years old, this photo would be 1917 or 1918.
Location is NOT the Abeling home on Maple Ave. Robert William Abeling confirmed that he did not move to the Maple Ave home to live with his grandparents until his younger brother Charles got sick around 1921. Most likely this would have been a home on Montgomery or Shultz St that Lester and Katherine Abeling were renting. |
 | Abeling boys at the Abeling home From left: Carl Abeling, Richard Abeling - holding Robert James Abeling Sr??, Robert William Abeling, then James Abeling on the right.
The location is the Abeling home on Maple Ave in Canajoharie, NY.
The date is estimated to be 1946 or 1947, but only if the young boy being held is Robert James Abeling, Sr. |
 | Frances Kilinski Abeling and Robert William Abeling and unknown girl. The boy on the left is Robert William Abeling, along with his aunt, Frances Kilinski Abeling.
Any ideas who the small girl on the right is?
Based on Robert being 2 or 3 in this photo, the photos age would be 1918 or 1919. The location is unknown. |
 | Frances Kilinski Abeling, Robert William Abeling, and Charles F. Abeling We believe the location is 112 Guy Park Ave, in Amsterdam, NY - taken about 1918-1920.

Right: One of Katherine's sisters, most likely Loretta, holding Robert W Abeling.
Estimated date of photo is 1918. Robert Abeling was born in March of 1916 and its very possible that he is two or at the most 3 in this photo. His younger brother, Charles was born in 1918 - and appears to be less than 1 year old. This would place the photo's date at 1918, and would also likely place the location of the photo in Amsterdam, New York, where Lester and Katherine lived at the time. |
 | Katherine Duffy Abeling and Robert W Abeling Robert was born in 1916. Assuming that he is under 1 year old, we are estimating that this photo was taken during the fall/winter of 1916 or possibly the spring of 1917. Location was most likely in Amsterdam, New York, where the family lived at the time. |
