William belonged to the National Guard - the date is 1913 - so he and Emma Miller we both 20 at the time. Emma and William were engaged for nine years because they had mothers to support.

  • Notes
    • We have some old, old family pictures of some people that we have no idea who they are - but we have multiple pictures of Carrie and her standing with my father (Albert b. 1920) holding what we call her orthopedic handbag. One thing I learned from my family is that the Germans did not talk about the old folks during wartime (I and II) I never knew anything about my great-grandfathers and neither did my father. There was a lot of secrecy around relationships and the folks who were gone. One thing that led to that family "no-talk" zone is that my grandfather, William, had severe seizure disorder - it disabled him as a young man and it was quite a burden of shame for my father's family as the attitude toward epilipsy was not one of understanding. So I will keep looking through some of our old pictures and see if I can make out anything - some of them have German script on the back
