    Notes
    • How do we know that Otto Abeling married Martha Hoffman?

So far, there is only one document that directly ties Otto to Martha. It is their oldest daughters death certificate for Bertha Abeling Dalton which states that her father is Otto Abeling and her mother is Martha Hoffman.

The following indicators also point towards Otto and Martha as being married...

      1) The census records of the children indicate that the mother was born in Connecticut and that the father was a) a male with the last name of Abeling and b) born in Germany.

      2) Following the census records, there are only 5 male Abeling's who were born in Germany that lived in Torrington, CT... Julius (who is too old to meet the description), and then his four sons - William, Herman, Charles, and Otto. Next, we use the process of elimination..... William, Herman, and Charles all have census records showing that they married other women and stayed as residents of Torrington, CT - which leaves us with Otto Abeling.

      3) Otto Abeling does not have any census records available that show he was living with Martha and the children - however, there is a census record that shows he lived in Wilson, Utah in 1920. In addition, he died in Idaho in 1929, and is listed as a widow. Since the other Abeling boys stayed in Connecticut, Otto appears to be the son who moved west.

      4) As teenagers, Martha Hoffman and Otto Abeling were neighbors. In the 1870 Census of Torrington, CT Martha and her family lived on the same street as Otto and his family - only 5 houses away from each other. Otto's father and Martha's brother likely worked at the same woolen mill, and Martha's other brother likely worked at the same skate shop as Otto's older brother.

      5) Just a hunch, but several of Martha's children were involved in Mining related jobs - which most likely did not happen as a result of her families history from Torrington, CT. In all likelyhood, it was Otto who was the first in the family to be involved in mining related jobs and most likely passed this on to his children. In fact, the 1920 census shows that Otto was living alone in Wilson, Utah working as..... a Mining Engineer.

Putting all of the available dates together, here is a very possible timeline...

1869: Otto moves to Torrington, CT from Germany

1870 Census: As teenagers, Martha and Otto are neighbors in Torrington, CT, and several of their family members appear to work at the same locations.

1876/77: Probable marriage date, most likely in Torrington, CT

1877: Birth of their first child, Bertha

1879: Birth of their second child, Alice

1880 Census: Martha is living with her parents in Torrington CT, along with Bertha and Alice. Otto is not found anywhere in the 1880 census - why not? One possibility is that he was already heading west, possibly looking for a future location for the family? Or he went to pursue his own dream of heading west for mining- and had to convince his wife to eventually head west to join him?

1883: Birth of their third child, Chester, in Montana

1885: Birth of their fourth child, Howard in Montana

1890 Census: Not available, as it was burned in a fire

1894: Otto Abeling resided in Burke, Idaho according to US Patent Records.

1895: On Dec 24, Otto and Martha's oldest daughter, Bertha marries Michael Dalton in Moscow, Idaho.

1900 Census: Martha is living in Moscow, Idaho along with Bertha, Alice, Chester, and Howard. But again, Otto is not listed - however, again Martha is listed as Married, but Otto is not in the household at the time of the census.

1910 Census: All of their children are listed as married and/or living off on their own. However, Martha is living alone in Moscow, Idaho, and is now listed as divorced.

1913: Martha Hoffman Abeling dies in Idaho

1920 Census: Otto Abeling is listed as living alone (but listed as widow), working in Wilson, Utah as an Mining Engineer.

1929: Otto Abeling dies in Idaho.

Burke, Idaho is the town where Otto Abeling resided in 1894, according to patent records.
    Downtown Burke, Idaho
    Downtown Burke, Idaho
Otto Abeling resided in Burke, Idaho in 1894 according to Patent Records. At the time, Burke was a boom town. However, geographically the town was in deep, narrow canyon.

    According to:

    http://www.idahomining.org/history.html

By 1890, the Northern Pacific tracks stretched through the Silver Valley and snaked up Canyon Creek to the boom town of Burke. Burke gained world-wide attention in "Ripley's Believe It or Not" as the town so narrow, merchants cranked their storefront awnings up for trains to pass. The Tiger Hotel straddled the tracks, and lodgers were regularly smoked out of their rooms when wood-burning locomotives passed underneath.

Otto is also identifed as living in Burke, Idaho in 1894, as this was his residence listed on his US Patent Application.

    Otto Abeling's US Patented Invention # 723803

Otto Abeling's 1911 US Patented Invention # 1145734, the "Road Rammer"
Filed on Sep 9, 1911, by Otto Abeling, residing in the Washington D.C. Issued on Jul 6, 1915, with Patent #1145734, for the invention called "ROAD RAMMER".

NOTE: Although it seems very possible that this is the same Otto Abeling, since he had previously filed patents, we have no other information indicated that Otto ever resided in Washington DC.

Our best guess at this time is that this is Otto Abeling, who most likely lives yet in Moscow, Idaho. Looking at the patent in detail - you will noticed that the drawings contain the signature of Otto's attorney - not Otto's signature himself. It could be that Otto drew up the sketches of the invention and then had his attorney file them.

      Burke, Idaho
Lead-Silver discoveries in 1884 attracted a railroad to Burke by 1887. Hundreds of miners lived there in a canyon so narrow that they scarcely had room for streets.
