 | Henry Yanney's Black Horse Tavern Building in 1795 by Henry Yanney, it became a popular local inn as it was located on the road between the Mohawk valley and Johnstown.
It was the location of a Edwards-Yauney family reunion that took place 100 years after John and Margaret's marriage. The newspaper articles about the reunion also list this as the location of where Margaret Yauney and John Edwards were married - however, this is not believed to be true, as the First Presbyterian Church in Johnstown has the official marriage records. |

 | 1840 US Census: Fulton County, New York The town is not identified, but I am guessing that's its Ephratah, NY based on the Getman and Yauney families also listed.
NOTES from Brian Abeling: Yes, I believe this is a John Edwards that lives in Ephratah,NY in 1840 - but I do not believe it is the John Y Edwards, son, or his father Congressman John Edwards. His father is ruled out because he should have been listed as being much older than 20 to 30 yrs. In addition, he did not have any children born in the late 1830's as this suggests.
As for the son John Y Edwards, this record is also unlikely to be him, as he would have been older than 20-30 at this time. In addition, there is a 1840 census records for John Y Edwards in St Johnsville that matches up with the proper children and ages in his family.

 | John Y Edwards residence in St Johnsville Photo was taken in 2007 of the former John Y Edwards residence. It is located at the corner of Route 5N and Fox Road.
We originally learned about this location through Vernonica Piniaha Edwards in 1976, who mentioned that long ago this was owned by the Edwards family.
Other artifacts include:
* 1868 map of St Johnsville that shows this location as being owned by John Y Edwards
* 1856 will of Adam I Klock, who lived at what is known referred to as Fort Klock, mentions John Y Edwards as his neighbor to the east. In addition, it mentions that his daughter Margaret married John Y's son Benjamin.
* History of St Johnsville documentation shows that Edwards Tavern was at this location dating back prior to 1850. |

* I question the date on this card - as Mary E's headstone at the Fort Plain cemetery also listed Sept 28, 1825 as her death date. Of course, its possible that she was born and died on the same day, but why is she then listed as baptised at the First Presbyterian Church? |
 | John Edwards, witness at 1820 Wedding I'm unsure of exactly which John Edwards this is, but it would probably make sense that it's John Yauney Edwards, as he would have been married within a few years of this date also.

Notes |
- Timeline of Artifacts for John Y Edwards...
Born: Late 1799 or early 1800:
Artifact 1: Headstone at Ft Plain Cemetery lists "John Y Edwards died Sept 25, 1873 Aged 73 years"
Artifact 2: Fulton County Republican Newspaper, produced in Johnstown, NY: dated Oct 9, 1873 lists...
EDWARDS- In St. Johnsville, Sept 26th, Mr. John Y. Edwards, formerly of this village ages 73 years and 10 months.
Using a date calculator, Sept 26, 1873 minus 73yrs and 10 months = Nov 25, 1799
.
- BAPTISM: At this time, no baptism records have been obtained for John Y Edwards. Considering that his parents did not marry until 1802, John Y Edwards would have been born out of wedlock, which complicates the situation.
Considering that his parents were married at First Presbyterian Church in Johnstown, we reviewed the records there and found no records.
"We do not have a birth/baptism record for John Y Edwards . The extant records are actually a 1916 typed transcription -- the location/existence of the originals is unknown-- the information in the Johnstown Library was copied from this transcription many years ago. (1798-1802 was searched)"
Roger Ritzmann
Clerk of Session
First Presbyterian Church of Johnstown, New York
* Birth/Baptism records were also reviewed for John Y Edwards between 1798 adn 1802 and no records were found.
* Our next search will be to find out what church Margaret's parents attended - as John Y is listed in his grandfather Henry Yanney's will. Perhaps he was recognized in the Yanney's church records.
.
- MARRIAGE:
At this time, we have not found a marriage record for John Y Edwards and Catharine Cook.
* We searched the records at First Presbyterian Church and found no marriage records...
"There is no marriage record for John Y Edwards and Catherine Cook. (1818-1822 was searched)" Roger Ritzmann, Clerk of Session, First Presbyterian Church of Johnstown, New York
* From the Edwards Family History, written by Amy Edwards Childs, dated 1970 (available at Johnstown NY Public Library), John Y and Henry Edwards are listed as marrying sisters from the Cook family. John Y married Catharine Cook and Henry married Elizabeth. This is verified by their headstones and other documentation.
* Casper and Lena Cook were the girl's parents - and they have a marriage records at Stone Arabia Church, so these churchs records were searched for marriages records for either John Y or Henry - and neither have been found yet. However, there is a baptism record for the oldest son of John Y and Catharine, Benjamin F Edwards.
.
- 1820, Nov 6th: Baptism record for oldest child, Benjamin Franklin Edwards at Stone Arabia Lutheran Church.
Lists: Benjn. Franckling born 1820, baptised Nov 6th 1820, parents John Y Edwards and wife Catharine. "parents" are listed in the sponsors column.
The church record does not list his birthdate - and this is unknown at this time.
.
- 1822: Birth of 2nd child, Christian Y Edwards. It's believed that Christian's middle name is also Yauney, but we have been unable to find documentation for this yet. In addition, we do not yet found a baptism record.
1824, May 3rd: John Y Edwards listed in Ephratah Reformed Church records. (http://fulton.nygenweb.net/churches/Ephmem1824.html)
"We the subscribers promise to pay the sum or sums set to our names to the Trustees of the first Presbyterian Church & Society of Palatine for the purpose of hiring the Rev. Caleb Knight to preach among us for three quarters of the time for one year beginning on his return from home probably in the month of June next -- The one half of said sum to be paid by the first day of January next & the remaining at the end of the year from the beginning -- Palatine May 3, 1824."
John Edwards, $3.00
John Y Edwards, $2.00
.
- 1825: Birth and death of 3rd child, Mary Eliza Edwards.
There is some confusion about exact dates for Mary Eliza, and unfortunately most of the records that exist were transcribed multiple times over the years, but here are the artifacts collected at this time....
1825, Sept 28th: Birth record of Mary Eliza Edwards, mother Catherine Edwards, Father John Y Edwards, records from First Presbyterian Church, Johnstown NY. This record was not found at the church - but on a index card in the family file index at Johnstown NY Public Library. I'm guessing that this card was transcribed from the church records.
1825, Sept 28th: Headstone at Edwards Family Plot at Ft Plain Cemetery, Ft Plain, NY. NOTE: this is NOT Mary Eliza's resting place, but just an inscription added to the family headstone. It lists: Mary E. Dau. of J.Y. Edwards, died Sept 28, 1825, Aged 1 Year.
1825, April 16th, Mary Elizabeth Died April 16, 1825, Aged 10 mos and 18 days. dau of John and Catherine Edwards. This was inscription on a headstone at the Yauney Family Cemetery that was copied by Mrs Caroline Fenton of Broadalbin in 1932. The transcript can be found at the Johnstown Historical Society, William Street, Johnstown NY. A few years after the inscriptions were done in 1932, the remains were disinterred, put in one box and reburied in the Johnstown NY Cemetery under a stone marked "Family of Henry Yauney". website: http://www.fulton.nygenweb.net/cemeteries/YauneyCem.html
Was this two different children or one? Considering the numberous transcriptions done, it could be the same children with a few references having trascription errors. I guess it could also be two different children, as during this time it was common to rename a child with the same exact name after the previous died. This would mean...
Mary Elizabeth: born May 29, 1824, died 10 mos and 18 days later on April 16, 1825. Buried in Yauney family plot, then moved in the 1930's to Johnstown Cemetery
Mary E, born Sept 28th 1825 and perhaps died that same day on Sept 28th, 1825?
.
- 1827:
* Jan 6, 1827: Henry Yanney (father of Margaret Yanney/Yauney), files his last will and testament at the county court house - and within it he mentions his grandson, John Y Edwards.
"Sixthly, I give and bequeath unto my daughters Susannah Younglove, Catharine Boshart and Dolly Bedford that is to Catharine five hundred hundred [sic] dollars, Susannah three hundred dollars, to Dolly one hundred dollars: To my grandchildren Susannah, Joseph and Catharine Quilhot each two hundred dollars: to John Y. Edwards twenty five dollars: to have to them respectively to their respective executors, administrators and assigns forever, to be paid by my son Philip in seven equal annual payments after my wife?s decease, the first however to each of whom are minors to commence from and after they respectively attain the age of twenty one years, but in no case is any payment to be made to any of the said legatees until after the expiration of one year after the decease of my said wife subject to the directions herein next stated."
* 1827 Approximate birth year of daughter Mary Edwards, who later married William Clark. My assumption is that Mary Edwards is not be associated with the earlier daughter, as it appeared the first or first few Mary's died young.
.
- 1829:
* August 4th, 1829: Birth of daughter Margaret Edwards, who married Amos Klock.
* John Y Edwards is listed as a trustee at the Ephratah Reformed Church, Ephratah, NY.
"The next efforts toward an established church at Ephratah is found in the county clerk's records at Fonda, where is recorded the incorporation of "The Dutch Reformed and Presbyterian Church of Ephratah." The record is dated June 1, 1829. At this time (1805-1828) the Rev. John Wack was the supply at Stone-Arabia, and, without doubt, he looked after the religious work at Ephratah, when there was no pastor there. A good many of the Ephratah folks were in the habit of attending the Stone Arabia church, while a few also went occasionally to the Tillaborough church (cf). The trustees of this 1829 church at Ephratah were John Rickard, Philip Kring, Harmanus Shaver, Christopher Getman and John Y. Edwards. Notice that Christopher Getman was the clerk of the original organization in 1823, and Philip Kring (whose name appears in connection with the Tillaborough church in the Stone Arabia records) Qas a trustee of the original church. Between the dates of 1835 and 1851 there are no minutes recorded of any election of trustees for this church, and in 1859 it was formally disbanded. No name of any minister is recorded in connection with this "Dutch Reformed and Presbyterian Church." obtained from http://www.threerivershms.com/Ephratah.htm

At this time, we do not know the circumstances related to her death.
