Notes |
- Notes from Tom Edwards, who is researching the ancestory of Talmadge Edwards. This information has not been confirmed yet, but is being added to the site as it seems to be relevent information for the search....
I'm writing because I think I have located new information on the ancestors of Talmadge Edwards and his English/ Welsh origins. I bought an account of the Edwards Family from a website on-line.
This account shows Talmadge being born to a Daniel Edwards and Experience Hedges(Talmadge) in a place called Beekman's Patent, New York. The basis for this claim comes from ledgers of a business named the "Sleight Store". The marriage can be cross referenced but I haven't found any other records of Talmadge's parents or place of birth.
Daniel's ancestry is traceable. His father was also a Daniel. Daniel senior was the son of Thomas. Thomas was the son of William Edwards and Ann Cole. William and Ann came to America from Maidstone, Kent, England some time before 1630. They lived in Lynn or Taunton, Massachusetts. William's father was Richard Edwards. Richard Edwards appears to have been the one from Wales.
- More notes from Tom Edwards, dated Jan 2007...
I read an article that referred to an unknown brother of Talmage. In hopes of tracing where Talmage came from in the British Isles, I've tried to verify the existence of said brother.
On some UK websites I used the names of Talmage's grandchildren to search for relatives.
Just last week I came across a clue: a Daniel Edwards b.1748 in Wiltshire. One of Talmage's grandsons was named Daniel. The parish of Wiltshire has heavy Welsh influence.
Lo and behold, on pages 252-253 of your Encyclopedia, it says Talmage and his brother Daniel came from an area between England and Wales (Wiltshire?). The brothers landed in Connecticut, Talmage moved on to NY, Daniel is thought to have died in Conn. during the Rev. War period.
I'm not certain if this Wiltshire Daniel is in any way related to us, but it is quite a coincidence. Another interesting thing about the Wiltshire area is a fairly nearby place called Stoke Talmage. Maybe Talmage Edwards could actually be named after a place. The original owners of Stoke Talmage--the Tollmasche Family-- had an alliance with King Edward way back when.

Historian's report
In his report to the committee, county Historian Peter Betz said the Microtel on Route 30A has worked with local historians to present some large prints of scenes from Johnstown's past.
"I believe all the artwork has been done for the Microtel lobby," he said.
Betz said he and Johnstown Historian Noel Levee will be working on text for the motel's historical displays.
Continuing his report, Betz said he attended meetings of the Mohawk Valley Museum Consortium June 9, and the Western Frontier Symposium June 11. He also spoke to the Edinburg Historical Society June 17 on the topic, "What Does A County Historian Do?"
On Tuesday afternoon, Betz said he attended the dedication of the new Parkville historic marker with Northampton Historian Gail Cramer.
For more information, see the Living section of The Sunday Leader-Herald.
Betz said it was the first of four markers proposed to be erected this summer, the others being in Johnstown, Perth and Broadalbin.
Betz said he is working with Levee on language for a new marker honoring Talmadge Edwards - the first person known to have made and sold gloves and mittens in the county, about 1808.
