Abeling Hotel

The Abeling Hotel was originally known as the Mountain View House. It was build by Edward Rockwell. Mr. Rockwell sold the business to Wallace Bloss another prominent businessmen in area. Around 1920, Fred and Frances Abeling came to the valley from Canajoharie, New York. Mr Abeling had been in the United State Army during the Mexican Campaign and World War I. Fred was one of the surveyors for the building of the Conklingville Dam. He an his wife settled in Day Centre where they bought the hotel and store. The hotel became a gathering place for both natives and out-off -towners because of the many interesting and amusing events that took place. There was seldom a dull moment at the Abelings' Hotel. When the valley was flooded, the hotel was moved up from the waters' edge, but the store was left to become yet another foundation under water.
