 | 1840 US Census: Cobleskill, Schoharie Co, NY Status: Located; This page includes John Smith, married with one boy under the age of 5 and one girl under the age of five.
My guess is that this is the correct John Smith - as the 1855 Census indicated that John lived in the area since 1815. In addition, John and Elizabeth had only 1 girl and 1 boy at the age of this census, and each child was under the age of 5. |

 | 1840 US Census: Fulton County, New York Status: Located; The town is not identified, but I am guessing that's its Ephratah, NY based on the Getman and Yauney families also listed.
NOTES from Brian Abeling: Yes, I believe this is a John Edwards that lives in Ephratah,NY in 1840 - but I do not believe it is the John Y Edwards, son, or his father Congressman John Edwards. His father is ruled out because he should have been listed as being much older than 20 to 30 yrs. In addition, he did not have any children born in the late 1830's as this suggests.
As for the son John Y Edwards, this record is also unlikely to be him, as he would have been older than 20-30 at this time. In addition, there is a 1840 census records for John Y Edwards in St Johnsville that matches up with the proper children and ages in his family.
includes...
John Edwards (assuming that he's the oldest male in the family, he would have been between 50 and 60 years old)

 | 1850 US Census: Marion, Ogle County, Illinois Status: Located; This page includes:
Cyrus B. Cook, 23 yrs old, born abt 1827 in NY, Shoemaker (note: his age must be recorded incorrectly)
wife, Phebe, 30 yrs old, born abt 1820 in Ohio (again, it appears that her age and birth location are incorrect)
son, Lyman H, 12 yrs old, born 1838 in Ohio
son, William H, 8 yrs old, born 1842 in Ohio
daughter, Hannah, 6 yrs old, born in 1844 in NY
daughter, Matilda, 2 yrs old, born in 1848 in Illinois.
NOTES:
This appears to be the right family since...
* Lyman's age matches up with th 1838 from Ohio that was thought to be correct.
* Lyman's parents are Cyrus B and Phebe.
* Phebe's maiden name is Hayes - and it appears that her parents and siblings are also located on this same census page.
However, the significant problem is the age of his parents - as Cyrus appears to be 23 years while his son is 12. My guess is that the parents ages are incorrect on this specific census. |
